ABOUT
SWEAT RECORDS
music, culture + 305 style
Sweat Records is a full-service
indie music store in the heart of Miami bringing you CDs,
LPs, DVDs, magazines, accessories, Japanese toys, unique
gifts, local art, music + other random merch. We are located
inside of Miami's legendary Churchill's Pub (est.1979).
Sweat
Records has a unique selection of CDs and LPs geared toward
the independent/eclectic/underground/aesthetic musical
tastes of South Florida. The store features a high-end
community DJ setup where anyone from novices to pros can
come in and spin, a book club, an entertainment center
and so much more - Sweat is here for YOU.
About
the owner:
LAUREN RESKIN (24) is a
Miami native and proud of it, bro. Music is in Lauren’s
blood – her late grandmother, Joan Field, was a
concert violinist who released records on Deutsch Gramophone.
Her late grandfather, Alan Reskin, opened Allegro Music
House in 1961 making Lauren the second Reskin to open
a music store in South Florida. Her father Charles is
a Julliard graduate and professional trumpet player. It's
also worth mentioning that Lauren is the great-niece of
Alan Freed, the famous/infamous 1950’s radio DJ
and music promoter who coined the phrase “rock and
roll.”
By
day, Lauren (or Lolo as she's known to most) spent 5+
years as a sales associate at the Miami Virgin Megastore
and gleefully sold her last Linkin Park CD ever in January
2005 when she quit to pursue Sweat full-time. By night,
Lauren is well-known locally as a DJ and club promoter.
She was one of the founding DJs at Miami staple Revolver,
created the popular 80s night VICE, and has promoted for
long-running indie weekly Poplife, among others. Currently,
she is 1/2 of the popular roller skating party "ROLL
OUT at Rainbow Sk8" Tuesdays at the Gold Coast Roller
Rink in Ft. Lauderdale. Now that Sweat is up and running,
Lolo has started a variety of other projects including
a 'zine called The Sweater, a SoFla-centric record label
called Sutro, as well as working as a writer, graphic
designer and event coordinator.
About
the co-founder at large:
SARA YOUSUF's (26) parents came to America from Pakistan
with hopes of having a daughter who would overlook medicine
to pursue a career in independent music retail. Sara moved
to Miami from Detroit, MI in 1998. In that time, Miami
has enchanted her with its shady charm. She spent 5 years
(1999-2004) as a disc jockey for the University of Miami’s
college radio station, WVUM 90.5 FM. For the last 3 years
of her tenure at WVUM, Sara hosted the popular drive-time
“All Request Show," which inspired her to provide
Miami with a local music source worthy of its inhabitants.
Sara graduated from UM Law in May of 2005, passed the
frickin' bar exam, and now works at the Miami Public Defender's
Office keeping our city's residents out of jail and off
the pipe. Sara is also a member of Emerge Miami, an organization
that works to create a social network for
activists.
